With a name like Wicked Grounds you would
think a pup would be cowering under the kitchen table; even
if Sir is jingling the leash! But much to the surprise of one
very apprehensive puppy, Wicked Grounds is one of the most inviting,
friendly, leather accepting places, not just coffee shops,
but places, I have ever been! Sure I could run through
Starbucks on all fours, barking at people; but getting escorted
out by security over and over again gets a little tiring.
While the treats and drinks at this local
coffee shop are delicious, it’s not so much their flavour as
much as it is that a pup can have his drinks and treats out
of a standard cup and plate, yes, but also out of a dog dish!
And no, you don’t have to bring your own! They present you with
a placemat (In case the floor is less that sanitary) and your
favourite drinks and or treats in a dog bowl! Typically the
pups all eat on the floor, usually gathered around one another
and growling if another pup gets too close to his bowl.
Like most San Francisco buildings it’s quite
long but slender in shape which limits where and when we can
romp and play. But indeed; Romp and Play you can! Near the back
is what could be considered a cove with a few tables in it but
more than that a bit of open space for the puppies to play and
romp and wrestle! The hardwood floors look beautiful, but bring
your knee pads because you’ll need them! The people there accept
the puppies romping as casually as you would see children wrestling
at the park; it’s just assumed it will happen. I’ve been there
on nights where business women type away on their Mac book’s
and casually move the laptop as the table gets run into but
never averting their eyes from the screen. Again, much the way
a parent knows the child will behave and pays it no mind. It’s
heart warming to see something that’s so common place to us
finally be treated as common place to others!
On the third Sunday of every month they host
“Human Pet Night” Since that announcement I’m sure they’ve added
many more events to their schedule and one should always check
back to see just WHAT they’ve added. While that night is designated
specifically FOR human pets, as a community we are welcome there
in any form, on as many legs and for as many delicious treats
as our puppy tummy’s can handle! (Word to the wise: lay off
the heavy shakes and treats if you roughhouse like this little
puppy does.)
When friends come in from out of town who
are also part of the leather community and want to see all the
beauty that this fair city has to offer; take them to the Golden
Gate Bridge, take them to see KOIT Tower, but take them to Wicked
Grounds too. Let them feel at home there as I do because there’s
nothing like it.
Until the next instalment, this is Fender
Pup saying, “Get off the couch… GET OFF THE COUCH!!!”
