One can spend quite some time on Maslow's Hierarchy of needs however that is covered in many text books so you can understand that detail another time. Suffice to say that your pup has basic needs, starting  at the coarse level and moving towards the finer detail. 
In human terms you need  shelter and food above a profit share scheme.
In slave terms he needs:

• Understanding of his role, what it is to be a dogslave, the way he needs to be treated
• Needs to develop a trusting relationship with his Master
• Needs SM that is pushing/testing/taxing his limits with a view to setting new ones, but does not breach them.
• Doggy peer group, sense of belonging (dog pack behaviour), pack identification (including dog chain, markings etc)
