What's In a Name

Popularity:

The most popular dog name in North America is Sam, Sammie or Samantha (which means "listener").
The second most popular is Max, Maxie, Maxwell or Maxine (which means "the greatest" in Latin).
Third is Lady, followed by Bear, Maggie, Buddy, Tasha, Chelsea (or Chelsie), Holly and Shasta. Other
very popular names are Brandy, Ginger and Taffy.

When God had made the earth and sky, the flowers and the trees, He then made all the animals and all the birds and bees.
And when his work was finished, not one was quite the same.
He said, "I'll walk this Earth of mine and give each one a name."
And so he travelled land and sea and everywhere he went, one little creature faithfully followed until its strength was spent.
When all was named upon the Earth and in the sky and sea, this little creature sorrowfully said, "Dear Lord,
there's not one left for me."
The Father smiled and softly said, "I've left the best to the end, I've turned my own name back to front and called you 'DOG', my friend."

Its part of the dogs identity - it is who he is so choose it well.
As with naming everything, finding a good name for your dog is important, it both describes him and conveys your aspirations of him. Some names can cause people to judge a dog slave and react positively or negatively/fearfully when meeting it. Depending on whether the dog is a pet, work dog, show dog, tracking dog or any other dog that works with the public, it might be important to use a name that conveys the proper image.

Common Names

Be aware of names that you are your pup use. Names commonly found in the kitchen like biscuit, toffee, fudge or other common names like fido or spike are all very fine. The snag comes when you got to a SM dog show and you call "Here Spike!"  and 20 dogs come running. It is also a bit of a snag when you are choosing your nickname for profile sites, like how many "Master2004" might there be since someone got to "Master" first.

I chose "TopDog1" because everyone would log onto IRC as "topdog" and I got it in as many places as possible after that e.g. topdog1 AT best dot com and so on. In my case I have been around for a while and am known.
